Franchising remains a prominent sector in the New Zealand economy. 546 brands with 29,750 business units, directly employing 114,300 people, with a combined turnover of $73.4 billion (including estimated motor vehicle sales and fuel retail). 73% of our franchise businesses are home grown in New Zealand, and 20% have expanded into overseas markets.
Franchising is a stable business model with 80% of franchise businesses operating for more than a decade.
There is still plenty of room for growth and opportunities. In addition to new geographic areas, franchise businesses are actively looking for opportunities to use AI and digital solutions, improve sustainability, and be innovative with product development.
